Praise for Homeownership University
Dear Colleagues, December 2nd, 2008
Once upon a time, not so long ago, it was my job as writer/reporter/anchor of what is now known around the world as CNBC-TV to gather all the financial news I could get and interpret it for a nationwide audience. More than 12 years ago, I made the transition to being a community college Professor and discovered much to my surprise how much more fulfilled I feel nurturing students.
After renting homes, this is the year my wife and I decided it was time to buy. And we decided we had a great opportunity to get a mortgage from our California State Teachers Retirement System.
We found the home of our dreams, but found it very frustrating trying to get detailed information about CalSTRS home loans from CalSTRS itself. Then there came a day, I received an invitation to attend a “webinar” from a mortgage broker who promised to explain all that I wanted to know.
I’m writing this note today to encourage all of you who qualify for CalSTRS home loans to take full advantage of “instructor” Scott Schang and/or his team at Broadview Mortgage Corporation in Orange, CA., who offer continuing “classes” on how to get the biggest bang for your buck with CalSTRS.
Let’s get real here. I was fully expecting some high powered sales dude delivering a high octane pitch designed to lasso me into some corral I didn’t want to end up in. So I was skeptical and defensive.
Instead, what I heard was a caring Instructor like myself eager to familiarize me with all I wanted to know. I’m a public speaking professor now, so I listened with very critical ears. Evaluating him as I would like any college student, I’d give Scott an A. Great beginning, great close, energized but low key delivery, great visual aids, credible sources. I learned a lot, and wished I had known about what he shared a lot sooner. No corral.
Previously, I had asked many of my colleagues on campus if they knew anything about the CalSTRS home loan programs. Sadly, only one had taken advantage of the program, and he was delighted. All others I spoke to said they learned too late, or were unaware of any CalSTRS mortgage program.
So bottom line, here I am to shout it from my housetop that if you get an invitation to attend a Broadview “webinar”….sign up. Scott and his team are tremendous resources for you to become better informed. Hard to believe that there are hundreds of brokers like him throughout the state who could tell you about CalSTRS loans, but none that I know of who have an outreach program to teachers like you and me. Give him and them a chance to enlighten you.
CalSTRS has great programs to help you buy a home even with as little as 3% down. It’s a great time to buy a home and you’ll actually be strengthening our retirement program by using CalSTRS rather than other lenders.
Professor, Imperial Valley College
just had the question posed yesterday regarding the upcoming California Tax Credit. Didn’t have a response other than I was aware of it. Scott’s presentation today solidified the subject. Now I can speak with some degree of authority after this refreshing presentation. Its always a pleasure to hear him. You can hang you hat on what Scott has to say!

After running into questions regarding a CalSTRS loan with another lender, I gave Scott a call after watching one of his recorded webinars. Scott spent at least 20 minutes on the phone with me going over my GFE and answering questions, as well as giving me questions to ask my current loan guy. Due to Scott’s assistance, I was able to assure myself that my lender was legitimate, and escrow is going smoothly. Despite not being Scott’s customer, he treated me with the same dignity and respect as I’m sure he gives his clients. I cannot recommend Scott more highly – he’s a great guy, and a true professional. Thanks, Scott!
Scott, I wanted to take a minute to drop you a quick note about how impressed I am with your team. My wife and I thought that we were years away from getting into the home buying game. (we haven’t been pre-approved yet but I’m confident we’ll get there) Late last week I discovered that our dream may be possible with the existence of the CalSTRS loan. We talked with family about it over the weekend and we decided that perhaps the best course would be to see take each step and see where we end up.
On Monday, we were pre-qualified for a CalSTRS loan with Haven West Mortgage. I had never heard of them and I didn’t know really know much about who they were or what this process was. Over the course of Monday night I thought perhaps my best bet would be to secure financing through Bank of America as they are my bank and why not have all of our financial obligations with them?
On Tuesday, I met with one of their loan officers and I asked him how many CalSTRS loans he had done. He said not many but they were fairly straight forward and there should be no problems. I left BofA feeling pretty good that everything would be fine. Now I need to say that throughout this entire process I discovered your website, your videos, your blog and have been reading as much information as I could. (BTW, you need a better website name ) Just yesterday, I read the article about the Bait and Switch that often happens.
By then I was fully aware that a CalSTRS loan is an amazing product and it’s too bad more people can’t take advantage of it. Alright, so last night my BofA guy calls me. Asks me to submit all of the documentation etc. But then says that a lot of his customers he has heard of in the past have left a CalSTRS loan and gone with FHA instead. I finished the call thinking yeah ok whatever let’s see where this goes, but I cannot fathom that that could possibly be the case. Furthermore, I’m insulted that he thinks I walked into his office not being informed and educated about what I’m doing.
I’m a pretty smart guy and I don’t like even a hint of being taking advantage of. After that call I listened in on Mario’s webinar and was informed even more. I asked a question regarding what had happened to me and your colleague Peter responded to me fairly quickly via email. Then I called him on my way home. First, I was skeptical about using a financial institution other than a well known one because you just don’t know what’s out there.
I asked Peter to explain to me why Broadview went to all this trouble if you guys don’t make much money of each loan. It just boggled me as to why a lending institution that makes little money off these loans would go out of it’s way to educate consumers. We had a very informative conversation and he answered all of my questions. I wanted to tell you that because of your business honesty, commitment to education, the fact that your in it for the long haul made me trust you and earned my business.
We’re not even pre-approved yet with Peter but I’m already amazed by his knowledge and professionalism. I can rest assured that although this home buying experience may have ups and downs I do not have to worry about how the lending side of things is being handled. Thank you for all of your hard work and what you do. If there’s anything that I can do to help you get the word out more or referral or something please let me know.
I simply feel that you’re this amazing business that not many people are aware of and who get taking advantage of. BTW, any workshops happening in the LA area anytime soon? Thanks again, Sean

I am SO glad I found this site. My 1st lender misinformed me about CalSTRS and wouldn’t provide me with a GFE or my pre-approval letter. My 2nd lender didn’t deliver on his promises, either. The entire time I kept referring to this site for the info. I wasn’t getting from my lenders. At one point, I posted a question, and Scott answered and referred me to loan officer John Evans. Even though I wasn’t applying for a loan, John took my calls and answered all my questions. Finally, I got smart and now Katella Broadview is my lender. It’s been a smooth groove since.
This was the first, but not the last class I attended. I learned so much. Scott was great and made things easy to understand!
I would like to thank Broadview and Mario Basura for both his knowledge and patience in answering all of my questions. I really appreciate it. A few years ago, I started the process to purchase a home with my friend but due to a couple of bad experiences with very dishonest lenders I discontinued the process. Ever since, I have been reluctant to begin the process again until attending the webinars with Broadview and working with Mario. Thank you!!
Scott and his team at Broadview deserve More than 5 stars! On all counts, they have succeeded in surpassing my highest expectations with exemplary service, expertise, and support. As a first time home buyer, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have found these folks! Not only do I receive accurate up to date information on all aspects of the business, I have been treated all along with respect and consideration. Please add me to your long list of satisfied clients!

Fantastic class! I felt like Scott did a wonderful job of explaining everything in terms that were easy to understand. Home buying is such a difficult and confusing process, and I felt that Scott brought a sense of clarity to it. Thank you so very much and I will look forward to more classes!
I found the webinar very easy to follow. Scott has a way to explain things in everyday language that puts anxious people like me at ease. The immediate feedback from online questions was great! Loved it and plan to take more classes to educate myself. Thank you
I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the professionalism, expertise, and genuine kindness of Scott Schang. Not only did I learn a great deal from the webinars I attended, but I was given personal attention and education via email and phone when I needed it—even though I was not a client of Broadview Mortgage Corp! My only regret is that I was not able (due to a previous commitment) to use the services of his Mortgage Bank; I am confident that my house-buying experience would have been a much more positive one had I been able to do so. THANK YOU for being a “human being” in a sea of greedy corporate types who (despite dealing with us educators!) don’t really want to teach people how to make one of the most important decisions of their lives. Scott, you and your programs fill a much-needed void and I am happy to help get the word out about you.
I am a teacher trying to find a loan to help my family purchase our first home. In what can be a very confusing time, I was able to find clarity in your webinar. It was easy to log in, follow along, and get instant feedback when I had a question. I would recommend attending a webinar to anyone interested in finding out more about the calstrs programs. I feel like I am one step closer to making my dream of owning a home a reality. Thank you!
This was my first class ever on info covering home purchasing. I found it very educational, enlightening and do plan to refer a friend to your site. This friend is also in the market for a home. I look forward to future classes held by Scott Schang — Thank you for making these available to anyone with the interest in learning on homeownership / purchase..
- Alice G
It was a good overview of those programs, e.g. different down payment requirements and income and price limits that the programs impose. I am looking forward to more because I’m still pretty confused about various aspects of home buying.
- Sachiko Halper
I have participated in 3 homeowner classes and each included valuable information and tools. With the resources offered through CALSTRS and Scott’s guidance, we were able to purchase a home for our family. Thank you!!!!
The presentation was well organized. His script followed the bullets in a clear and understandable fashion. I’m glad you gave some pointers on what to avoid in foreclosures and short sales. There have been several seminars which preach something for a little of nothing. Thanks for being honest and clear.

You very much make one feel empowered to enter the process to buy a home. I feel excited! Thank you.
Teacher, Santa Clara
I thought that Scott made it easy to understand the scope of this program by providing the context of the current market, focusing on realistic expectations of our “buying power”, comparing against similar programs, and offering strategies for down payment options and saving money.

This was an outstanding source of information. It will save you a ton of money in the end. I never realized what buying power advantages I’d have as a teacher.
Scott did an awesome job. I could tell he “had our back.” Very professional, knowledgeable, articulate, and passionate about his job.

I have found the classes to be incredibly helpful. I really appreciate Broadview Mortgage taking the time to help educate people like me.
Great information! I received a lot of information and it has made it me more curious to participate in other webinars.
Incredible, one stop to get all of this valuable information.
Very informative! I would recommend these Webinars to any first time home buyer to become familiar with the process or as a refresher course.
I think they are great! I really appreciate the heads up on the red flags to watch for, being a first timer.
Being new to the process, this was a great way to gain valuable information. I now have a better understanding. Thank you for making this available.
I appreciated that he used bulletins and explained them. He made the topic very easy to understand.
This class was structured and conducted very well. Many of my questions on short sales and foreclosures were cleared up after watching.
You presented the information in a clear and concise manner. The information I learned today has made me a more informed consumer. I would like to buy a home within the next 6 months, so I am sure that I will sign on again to listen to another Webinar. Thank you very much.
This class was very informative. I’ve never even thought about purchasing a home because I didn’t think I could afford it. Now it might be a good time to go into it.
This was my first Webinar and I really enjoyed hearing the information in my home setting. The power point and commentary was very easy to understand. I look forward to receiving the follow-up information so I can do some research myself and explore my financial options.
Scott goes at a very good pace, and I always leave with a lot of information. He makes sure I have access to resources about everything we discussed. Thank you.
I found this class very informative, honest and upfront. I will be taking more of your classes.
I think these classes are a great asset to many of us uneducated, future home buyers. With all of the mess that’s going on in the real estate/mortgage loan business, it is such a breath of fresh air to hear someone who is passionate (oh, yes you are!!) about helping people to understand this business in such a way that we do not get “taken.” I greatly appreciate your time and desire to help many of us who really do want to own our own homes–affordably!
These webinars are great! Thank you so much! Most people in the business don’t want to give you any information or help unless you are ready to buy or work with them. This is helping me so much. I am working on raising my credit score and waiting for my tax return so that I can use that as part of my down payment. It’s nice to know that there is another option to help with down payment. Thank you so much for the free classes and I will definitely be contacting a specialist.
The class was very insightful and full of good details and explanations for buying short sales and foreclosures. I still can’t believe you guys offer these classes for free!
This was the first webinar I participated in, my experience was great. I had my answers answered quickly and kindly.
I appreciated the direct, professional approach. I didn’t feel like I was getting a sales pitch, that makes me feel much more comfortable with the quality of the education I was receiving. I look forward to future classes!
I am consistently impressed with the quality of the courses that I have taken. Scott is professional, well prepared and knowledgable. As a first-time home buyer, I feel more comfortable going in to this process armed with what I have learned in these webinars.
Great information , makes me more confident and understanding of the homebuying process.
I feel like a much more empowered consumer thanks to Scott’s webinars.
With every on-line class, I feel closer to being ready to purchase my first home. Thanks for taking some of the “scare” out of the process.
The webinars are awesome! I would recommend these to all homebuyers.
Very informative and interesting! Thank you for these classes. They are easy to attend and I can gain as little or as much as I need from them without taking too much time out of my schedule. I even move my laptop around to wherever I am in the house and can learn while doing other things.
Unbelievably informative. The class went above and beyond what I expected and I’m incredibly encouraged because of it. Thank you all very much.
I’m glad I finally attended one of your classes. I teach in the SF Bay Area, and got the link from my school principal. The class, Guide to the CalSTRS 80/17, was very informative and non-threatening! As a single, female educator, it’s vital that the class was neither too simplistic (lender sales pitch) or too technical. This one delivered! Thanks!
Very informative & well done ~ I would recommend this class to all of my friends in the education field. Thank you!
